Programs
The faculty and staff of the journalism department welcome your interest
in our excellent graduate program. The following information will help
you plan the successful completion of a master of journalism or a master
of arts in journalism. It is the student's responsibility to follow all
requirements and procedures.

The Master's Program
The master of arts requires 30 semester hours of course work and a thesis
for 6 hours of credit (a total of 36 hours). The master of journalism
requires 36 semester hours of course work. The thesis is optional in the
MJ program. Leveling requirements vary, but generally students with degrees
in areas other than journalism will be required to complete from six to
12 hours of undergraduate journalism courses. Graduate and undergraduate
courses may be taken concurrently.To a limited degree, students may select
courses in specific areas such as news writing, advertising and public
relations. However, undergraduate prerequisites may be required in specialized
fields.The Mayborn Director will refer a new student to a major professor
appropriate to the graduate student's interests to serve as program adviser. For
