Federal Jobs
How to Find and Get a Federal Job

By Krista Shatto

There are some interesting statistics you should know before seeking a job
with the federal government:

  • 12 percent of all Federal jobs are in Washington, D.C.
  • Most government employees work in offices, shipyards, laboratories,
national parks, hospitals and military bases.
  • 57 percent of civilian jobs are in the competitive service area.
  • Over 1.2 million people serve in the active U.S. armed forces.
  • The job outlook for all federal jobs should be good for all qualified
    individuals through 2008.
  • There are 13 major occupational groups for enlisted personnel:

Administrative
Combat Specialty
Construction
Electronic
Engineering
Health Care
Human Resources
Machine Operation
Media and Public Affairs
Protective Service
Support Services

The following steps will help you find a job with the Federal Government.

Step 1    Identify the type of federal job you would like to apply for. You may also search for jobs by what types of skills you have in order to meet specific job qualifications. There are many search engines and Web sites online to research. The main website is www.usajobs.opm.gov or call USAJOBS by phone at (912) 757-3000.

Step 2    Search online for vacancy announcements. Review the Government or Federal Vacancy Announcement Lists. The announcements give information on specific duties, qualification requirements, ranking factors, application forms with instructions, locations of positions and contact information.

Step 3    Follow application instructions and meet requirements carefully and completely. The instructions, required application materials and where the application must be submitted differ with each announcement. For most jobs you can apply with a resume or an "Optional Application for Federal Employment" Form (OF-612) or some other written format.

Step 4    Receive an evaluation of your application. Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by the proper officials to determine if you meet the requirements for the position you are interested in.

Step 5    Interview for the job. The names and applications of the highest-ranking candidates are given to the supervisor or selecting official. Federal Civil Service laws ensure that all applicants receive fair and equal treatment in the hiring process. Be prepared to undergo background investigations, medical testing or other qualification testing.
